Introduction of the President
of the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic
The terms “controversial personality“ and “globalization“
became lately a common part of the vocabulary of many politicians and
journalists. After entering the majestic spaces of the Czech Senate, we can be
lured easily to use these expressions also for Albrecht of Waldstein and his era
marked by the Thirty Years´ War on the one hand and on the other hand by the
entrance of the baroque as a great Europewide art and building style which influenced
substantially the Czech Lands too.
The Czech Senate
has already been aiming for a longer time to become not only a significant part
of the constitutional system of the Czech Republic but it has also been making
attempts to become an important cultural and social centre through its
historical spaces too. The project of the exhibition Albrecht of Waldstein and His
Era will be one of the most dominant manifestations of these attempts yet. It
becomes a great challenge for historians and museum experts to depict a very
dramatic era and its main personalities in a multi-faceted way.
Albrecht of
Waldstein himself attracted by his controversial life of a great political and
military comet numerous Czech writers and playwrights in the past to depict the
fate of this personality in their works. Nowadays he will get into the
viewfinder of modern and completely erudite museum work which has got
sufficient amount of funds to present in an informed as well as attractive way
those years of the first half of the 17th century which fundamentally
influenced life and development of the Czech Lands for the next three hundred
years.
I believe
that this exhibition will also become a great opportunity for the future Czech
and foreign visitors who will have a chance to get acquainted in the Czech
Senate with the astonishing epoch during which from Italy to Sweden Europe got
thanks to great artists, scholars, merchants – but adventurers with a sword in
their hands too – new bases for its further interconnected cultural and
economic development.
